CTA Scholarships and Grants
CTA offers several different educational scholarships and grants to members and their dependents throughout the academic year. Application deadlines vary; please lick on the relevant link for further details and information.
CTA Scholarship for Members
Applications are now being accepted for the 2010 CTA Scholarship for Members. Up to five (5) $3,000 scholarships will be awarded.
Applications will be evaluated on Involvement in and sensitivity to human, social and civic issues that reflect responsibility, reliability and integrity; and educational and personal achievements that reflect academic and vocational potential.
Applications must be postmarked by February 5, 2010. Application form and criteria are available on the CTA website.
CTA Scholarship for Dependent Children
Applications are now being accepted for the 2010 CTA Scholarship for Dependent Children. Up to thirty-five (35) $5,000 scholarships are awarded.
Applicant must be claimed as dependent status on the current year’s IRS forms, and must be the dependent child of an active, retired, or deceased California Teachers Association member.
Applications must be postmarked by February 5, 2010. Application form and criteria are available on the CTA website.
Del A. Weber Scholarship for Dependent Children Attending Continuation High School/Alternative Education Programs
Applications are now being accepted for the 2010 Del A. Weber Scholarship for Dependent Children.
Applicant must be claimed as dependent status on the current year’s IRS forms, and must be the dependent child of an active, retired, or deceased California Teachers Association member.
Applications must be postmarked by February 5, 2010. Application form and criteria are available on the CTA website.
L. Gordon Bittle Memorial Scholarship for Student CTA
Applications are now being accepted for the 2010 L. Gordon Bittle Memorial Scholarship for SCTA. Up to three (3) $3,000 scholarships are awarded.
Applicants must be a current "active" member of Student CTA (SCTA), and must be pursuing a career in public education. Applicants may be in an undergraduate, teacher credential or graduate program.
Applications must be postmarked by February 5, 2010. Application form and criteria are available on the CTA website.
CTA César E. Chávez Memorial Education Awards Program
The César E. Chávez Memorial Education Awards Program provides recognition for students and their teachers who demonstrate an understanding of the vision and guiding principles by which César E. Chávez lived his life. The Awards Program honors the memory of this great man and ensures that the spirit of his work continues in the classrooms of California. For the current academic year, eligible projects must fit into the catergory of either written Essays or Visual Arts.
Applications are accepted for Individual Projects or Group Projects, and are submitted in conjunction with a CTA member who must be employed at the same school or campus where the students are enrolled.
Deadlines are typically in early January.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Scholarships are designed to assist all ethnic minority CTA members, their dependent children, and ethnic minority Student CTA members pursue degrees or credentials for teaching-related careers in public education. In 2009, CTA awarded four (4) $5,000 scholarships, four (4) $3,000 scholarships, and three (3) $2,500 scholarships to CTA dependent children; two (2) $5,000 schjolarships and one (1) $2,500 scholarship to CTA members; and three (3) $5,000 scholarships to Student CTA members.

The deadline for applications is Friday, March 5, 2010.
GLBT Safety in Schools Grant and Scholarship Program
The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Safety in Schools Grant and Scholarship Program was created to promote human and civil rights by making our public schools safe for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons. The grants support projects and presentations that promote understanding and respect for GLBT persons, while the scholarships support CTA members enrolled in a teacher/counseling credential program who are pursuing a career in public education and who understand the importance of GLBT educators as role models in our public schools.
Up to twelve (12) grants/scholarships of up to $2,000 will be made available annually to awardees.
Deadlines are typically in mid-November.
NEA Grants and Awards
Throughout the year, the NEA Foundation awards close to 200 grants to support educators' efforts to close the achievement gaps, develop creative learning opportunities for students, and enhance their own professional development. There are two primary grant categories open to public education professionals: Student Achievement Grants and Learning & Leadership Grants.
Student Achievement Grants
NEA Student Achievement Grants are designed to improve the academic achievement of students in U.S. public schools and public higher education institutions in any subject area(s). The proposed work should engage students in critical thinking and problem solving that deepen their knowledge of standards-based subject matter. The work should also improve students’ habits of inquiry, self-directed learning, and critical reflection.
The grant amount is $5,000.
Applications may be submitted at any time, and are reviewed three times per year, every year. Application form and criteria are available on the NEA website.
Learning & Leadership Grants
NEA Learning & Leadership grants support public school teachers, public education support professionals, and/or faculty and staff in public institutions of higher education for one of the following two purposes: Grants to individuals fund participation in high-quality professional development experiences, such as summer institutes or action research; or Grants to groups fund collegial study, including study groups, action research, lesson study, or mentoring experiences for faculty or staff new to an assignment.
The grant amount is $2,000 for individuals and $5,000 for groups engaged in collegial study.
