News From the Front: A Message from our President
June, 2010
By CCA President Ron Norton Reel
As you all know by now, the CCA President's Conference is scheduled for July 19-22 at the beautiful Asilomar conference grounds in Monterey...this is an extremely worthwhile conference for all chapter presidents, both new and old, to attend. Just click here to register, TODAY! In this month's newsletter, you can also catch up with what CCA is doing to encourage our legislators to reject any further cuts to public education as they work to pass a new budget (which is, of course, already late). And if you're interested in the subject of SLOs, read about the upcoming SLO Workshop for chapter presidents and their faculty SLO coordinators. Read my entire June President's Message here

National Commission Needs YOUR Input
Hundreds of thousands of educators continue to be penalized by unfair Social Security offsets, the Government Pension Offset and Windfall Elimination Provision.
Now, a national commission has been appointed to look into entitlement programs such as Social Security--and by extension, laws such as the GPO and WEP. E-mail the Commission at commission@fc.eop.gov and share with them how the offsets have impacted you, or will impact you when you retire, and urge Commissions to call for repeal of the Government Pension Offset and Windfall Elimination Provision. College of the Month: Rancho Santiago Community College
District
Continuing Education Faculty Association
July, 2010
The
State Budget It's not always easy to
understand what the budget crunch has done--or
likely will do--to our community colleges. It's even
harder to find out things like how your district is complying with the 50% Law...or where it
sits it terms of statewide full- and part-time
salaries. We can help you make sense of it all, with
Alan Frey's latest
Budget Update presentation.
Talk
It Up! Are you trying to find a way to talk persuasively to
your friends, neighbors, or even your legislators
about the plight of our community colleges? Then look to

Points for some great tips on what kind of information to use when
you're trying to show people how important it is to
support our public schools and colleges.

Think Locally, ACT Locally!
Believing that it is possible to effect positive change, the United Faculty of North Orange County Community College District recently kicked off a campaign to unseat three incumbents on the district's Board of Trustees.
Barbara Bennett, past president of United Faculty, stated that the union “wants change because the Trustees are not focusing on students. Instead, they’re a rubber stamp for the Administration.” Read the entire article here.

Blackboard
Move Galvanizes E-textbook Market In
a series of moves that could give a boost to an e-textbook industry
that has been treading water for years, Blackboard has announced that
it is partnering with a major publisher and two major e-textbook
vendors to make it easy for professors and students to assign and
access e-textbooks and other digital materials directly through its
popular learning-management system. The company, which controlled
about 60 percent of the learning-management market as of last year,
said it is partnering with McGraw-Hill, a top academic publisher, as
well as Follett Higher Education Group and Barnes & Noble, two major
distributors that operate a combined 1,500 college bookstores in the
United States and Canada.

Trustees Vote to Skip Bond Issue, Despite Critical Need Amid
fears of a possible “double-dip” recession and simmering anti-tax
sentiment, community colleges with pressing facilities needs are
deciding they cannot risk a defeat in a bond vote – and so are not
going before voters on this November’s ballot to ask for the funds
to properly address them. For example, after months of testing the
electoral waters, the Board of Trustees of the West Valley-Mission
Community College District, located in California’s Silicon Valley,
recently voted down a plan to put a referendum on the November
ballot for a bond issue that could have been as large as $400
million. The trustees wholeheartedly agreed that the money was
desperately needed to upgrade and replace aging buildings. But, as
one trustee put it at the June meeting, “I don’t think the timing
could be any worse.” West Valley-Mission is hardly alone in
failing to get a bond on this November’s ballot.
