In 1922, classes of Central Junior College began on the grounds of Central Union High School in El Centro. In 1951, the name was officially changed to Imperial Valley College. The college eventually moved to a temporary location on the campus of the Imperial Valley Union High School in Imperial; then, in 1960, construction of a permanent campus began on the current 160-acre site in Imperial.  Imperial Valley College is now one of the state's fastest-growing community colleges.

The college also includes the Imperial Valley College Desert Museum, focused on the archeology of the Southern California desert and mountains. The museum, which has yet to open, features a 10,000 square foot building on a 25-acre desert plot in Ocotillo, CA. Exhibits will include the prehistory of the first peoples of Imperial County, botanic gardens of native plants, and an interactive center. The museum is currently the repository for more than 9,000 artifacts gathered from over 8,800 recorded archaeological sites throughout the Imperial Valley.
