NEA Annual Meeting and Representative Assembly

The 2010 Representative Assembly will be held in New orleans, July 1-3. Click here for additional information.

What is the Representative Assembly all about?  The Representative Assembly (RA) is the highest decision-making body within the over 3.2 million-member NEA. With over 9,000 delegates, the RA is also the world's largest democratic deliberative body. Over the course of eight business sessions spanning four days, RA delegates debate the vital issues that impact American public education and set Association policy and activities for the year ahead.

The RA is held during the six-day-long NEA Annual Meeting.  The first two days of the Annual Meeting are devoted to delegate registration and a wide range of pre-RA meetings, conferences, and exhibits. Elected delegates determine NEA's strategic plan and budget, legislative program, resolutions, and also vote on proposed amendments to the NEA constitution and bylaws and elect NEA's executive officers, Executive Committee members, and at-large members of the NEA Board of Directors.

How do I become a delegate to the RA?   NEA members in their affiliated groups (such as CCA and CFA) and chapters (CCA locals/faculty associations) elect their peers to represent their concerns at the RA. You may choose to apply as either a local or a state delegate. The delegates represent NEA local and state affiliates, student members, retired members, and other segments of the NEA membership. Only elected delegates may attend and participate in the RA. Each member wishing to run for state delegate must fill out a Declaration of Candidacy form and file it by the deadline.

The 2010 RA will be held during the NEA Expo 2010, July 1-3 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. Declaration of Candidacy forms are available now--please note that the deadline for submission of Candidacy forms to the Center Council Chairs has been extended to 5:00 p.m., Friday, February 5.
