Pt. Arena Research Station

The Mendocino-Lake Community College District was formed in 1972, with the first classes at what was then called Gateway Community College offered the following year at the Ukiah County Fairgrounds.  The Lake County Center opened in 1974, and the Willits Center in 1977. Ground was broken for a permanent Ukiah location in 1983.

The Point Arena Field Station is located on the Mendocino County coast between the city of Point Arena and the Point Arena lighthouse. The facility includes 15 acres of coastal terrace and tidal study areas.

The District boundaries encompass 3,200 square miles of service area, including Anderson Valley, Laytonville, Potter Valley, Round Valley, Ukiah, Willits, the Lake County Districts of Upper Lake, Kelseyville, and Lakeport. In 1981 the name of the District became Mendocino-Lake Community College District to better reflect the geographical area being served.
