Mt. San Antonio College was founded in 1946, and today is among the largest of California's 109 community colleges. Mt. SAC has more than 40,000 students, of which approximately 25,000 are credit, full-time and 16,000 are noncredit/continuing education students. The college is located on a 420-acre campus in the San Gabriel Valley, just 25 miles east of Los Angeles. It serves the communities of Baldwin Park, Bassett, Charter Oak, Covina, Diamond Bar, southern portion of Glendora, Hacienda Heights, City of Industry, Irwindale, La Puente, La Verne, Pomona, Rowland Heights, San Dimas, Valinda, Walnut, and West Covina.

In 2001, district voters approved a $221 million bond measure that allowed for the renovation and replacement of deteriorating facilities, and enabled the construction of over a dozen new facilities, comprising more than 250,000 square feet of new instructional space, athletic fields, infrastructure and support facilities.

Some of Mt. SAC's older buildings served as part of a small military hospital until World War II. Today, the school boasts a 15-acre Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the few remaining nature preserves in Walnut due to the area's rapid urban development.

The annual Mt. San Antonio Relays, described as the place "where the world's best athletes compete," attract some 15,000 athletes from more than 150 colleges and universities and an equal number of high schools throughout the U.S. and abroad. The event has showcased many great Olympians throughout its 49 year history.
