Hartnell College, one of the oldest educational institutions in California, was founded in 1920 as Salinas Junior College. The school was renamed Hartnell College in 1948, and eight years later moved to its present location at 411 Central Avenue in Salinas. Located in Monterey County, Hartnell serves the Salinas Valley, including he communities of Salinas, Bradley, Castroville, Chualar, Greenfield, Jolon, King City, Lockwood, Moss Landing, San Ardo, San Lucas, Soledad and adjacent rural areas.

Hartnell's King City Education Center is located is south Monterey County; it consists of a 2-story building with 6 classrooms, including a computer lab, learning skills lab, and a distance learning classroom.

A second outreach center, the Alisal Campus, serves the residents of East Salinas.

In Novmber of 2002, district residents passed a $131 million bond issue which will result in major renovations and upgrades to the college. By the time the project concludes in 2012, Hartnell will be able to serve nearly twice the number of students currently enrolled.
