The Merced Community College District was formed on February 27, 1962; classes were held in the Merced County Fairgrounds until the campus was built in 1964. The District comprises most of Merced County, the area of the Chowchilla Union High School District in Madera County, and the Dos Palos Joint Elementary School District. There are currently over 10,000 full- and part-time students attending MCC.
The Los Baños Campus serves residents of the west side of Merced County, and offers students the ability to complete all courses necessary for transfer as a liberal studies major, or complete an A.A. degree in general studies, early childhood education, or business. A variety of other courses are available for degree preparation, completion of a G.E.D., English as a Second Language, Certified Nursing Assistant or other classes for personal development.
Merced College's Tri-College Center is a collaborative effort between Merced College, CSU Stanislaus, and UC Merced, and houses various offices and classes for the three educational institutions as well as Merced College's Continuing Education center. The Tri-College Center is located on the northeast side of Merced College's main campus.
Merced Community College is a member of the Central Valley Higher Education Consortium (CVHEC). The mission of the CVHEC is to provide effective leadership that promotes programs, policies, and performance designed to increase higher education attainment by the people of the Central Valley.
