South Orange County Community College District serves some 25 communities in the southern region of Orange County, including Aliso Viejo, Capistrano Beach, Coto De Caza, Dana Point, Dove Canyon East, Santa Ana, Emerald Bay, Foothill Ranch, Irvine, Ladera Ranch, Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods Lake Forest, Las Flores, Mission Viejo, Newport Beach, Portola Hills, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, Trabuco Canyon, Trabuco Highlands, and Tustin. Through Saddleback College and Irvine Valley College, the district serves nearly 37,000 students.

 To provide a dynamic learning environment and diverse opportunities fostering student success and contributing to the community.  

District Goals, 2008-09

  • Promote and support enrollment management, emphasizing online degrees and certificates; new academic and career technical education programs; workforce development; and innovative instructional delivery modes.

  • Engage in systematic and integrated strategic planning and budgeting within the framework of regulatory compliance and board approved basic aid guidelines. 

  • Follow the Educational and Facilities Master Plan and address preventative maintenance and timely rehabilitation when making resource allocation decisions.  

  • Develop the Advanced Technology & Education Park (ATEP) through educational and business partnerships with multiple sources of funding.  Provide a safe and secure environment supportive of student learning. 

  • Promote and strengthen institutional integrity, effectiveness, and accountability consistent with accreditation standards.  Communicate the value of our services to stakeholders through increased community involvement and outreach.  Promote an environment to foster innovation and an entrepreneurial approach to resource and economic development.

  • Recruit a diverse workforce of highly qualified employees and provide them with professional development and other opportunities to succeed.    Ensure that students, faculty, and staff are informed of and have access to online and in person services, programs, available resources and policies. 

  • Promote a positive district-wide image through respectful interactions among faculty, staff, students, administrators, trustees and the community.   Support legislative efforts to sustain funding for community colleges, increase accessibility for students, and provide regulatory relief.   

  • Support the retention and success of all students, especially those with basic skills needs.  

  • Work positively and collegially to resolve accreditation recommendations.

Saddleback College is the largest college within the South Orange County Community College District. Since its doors opened to students in 1968, Saddleback’s dynamic campus and stimulating academic curriculum have upheld a tradition of success.  The College, which is located in the South Orange County City of Mission Viejo, is one of the largest of California’s 109 community colleges and has a student population of approximately 25,000.

To provide access to learning opportunities that promote student success; to foster intellectual growth, and individual expression; and to support a dynamic and diverse environment of innovation and collegiality.

Goals

The primary goal of Saddleback College is to provide a comprehensive postsecondary education and a full range of student services. Emphasis is placed on open access to all students, including a changing and diverse student population. Academic success and student achievement are joint responsibilities of the students, the staff, and the College. To this end, the College will:

  • Provide educational programs leading to the Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees.

  • Provide a comprehensive, broad range of high-quality courses and programs to enable students to pursue their educational objectives and career goals. Provide a meaningful general education program including baccalaureate-level transfer and occupational curricula.

  • Provide necessary developmental, remedial, and basic skills instruction so that students may be successful in their chosen course of study. Provide access for the community to the educational, cultural, and recreational resources of the College.

  • Provide counseling and other support services which are responsive to the needs of students.

  • Provide opportunities in continuing education and community services, including courses for skills upgrading and retraining for professionals and life-long learning for older adults.

  • Provide opportunities for the promotion of economic development within the scope of the mission of the District and the College.

Irvine Valley College was established in July of 1985 as Saddleback College North Campus. Today, more than 13,000 students are enrolled in IVC’s day, evening, and online programs. IVC’s transfer rate is #1 in Orange County and #3 among all California Community Colleges. Last fall, the college opened a new $34 million Performing Arts Center; this year, the $19 million, 53,000 square-foot two-story Business Sciences Technology and Innovation Center will open its doors and provide state-of-the-art classrooms and labs. These two projects are just part of an ambitious $100 million building program that will transform the entire campus over the next five years.

The college maintains high educational standards as measured by student learning outcomes including skills and knowledge gained.

The college is dedicated to successful and measurable student learning through the commitment of exemplary faculty and staff who offer a variety of traditional and innovative teaching methods, and provide access to state of the art technologies and facilities. The college is guided by a strategic plan based on data regarding changing student needs, evolving community diversity, and a rapidly changing economy.
