Sierra College's main campus is situated in Rocklin, in the low foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains some 20 miles east of Sacramento. Founded in 1914, what was then known as Placer College was originally located on the campus of Placer High School in Auburn, and was one of only nine junior colleges in the state. Severe enrollment losses caused by World War I forced the college to close its doors in 1920, but it reopened in 1936.

By the early 1950s, the college--now renamed Sierra College--was swiftly outgrowing its facilities, and in 1957 the district purchased the current site in Rocklin, which opened in 1961. Today the Sierra Community College District includes all of Placer and Nevada Counties and parts of El Dorado and Sacramento Counties, and is home to more than 20,000 students. In addition to its main campus in Rocklin, Sierra has three satellite campuses in Roseville, Grass Valley, and Truckee.
