Chris is a full-time History and Humanities faculty member at the College of the Siskiyous, where over the years he has served the COS Faculty Association as a negotiator, Vice-President and President. At COS he teaches a range of history and humanities courses including U.S. History surveys, American Environmental History, Introduction to Humanities and U.S. Women's History. His research interests include Cold War culture and political conservatism in the United States.

One of his most enjoyable activities is sponsoring the history club where his students get together and converse about historical topics of interest. He is husband to a beautiful, brilliant and talented partner named Sonya, father to three wonderful children and grandfather to Alix. During his free time he likes antiquing with his wife and playing board/card games of all types.

With a graduate degree in philosophy from San Francisco State University, Keith teaches courses in philosophy and humanities at Merced College that run the gamut from logic to comparative religion. He currently serves as the president of Merced College Faculty Association, and has been involved in every aspect of union building, from writing bylaws and grants, to creating the association's various committees. In addition, he has hands-on experience in the negotiation process, the grievance process, and the process of electing trustees.

A recent graduate of the Building Strong Locals Academy, Keith also attended the 2009 week-long President’s Conference in Asilomar. His first experience as a union activist was as an AFL-CIO shop-steward for the Hayward, CA Post Office. Keith believes that his work for CCA/CTA/NEA is essential for the betterment of the teaching profession, and thus for educational excellence.

JoAnn has been a full time communication studies instructor at Delta College since 1991. Previously she taught a year full time at Chabot College, and she taught part time for fourteen years at Ventura College and other universities/colleges in southern California. Among the courses JoAnn teaches or has taught are public speaking, oral interpretation, group communication, interpersonal, and argumentation/ debate. Additionally, she was a speech coach at Delta and Chabot colleges. Currently, her favorite class to teach is interpersonal communication.

JoAnn has served fifteen years in several local union positions with the San Joaquin Delta College Teachers Association (SJDCTA). She is the current Membership Chair (nine years), Organizing Committee Chair and Crisis Committee Co-Chair for six years, and Division Representative for Communication Skills for eight years. She received the WHO award in 2008 and has been presented a Membership/Recruitment award seven times. Her local level experience runs the gamut from recruiting new members, developing by-laws, writing grants, renting an off-campus space, organizing a phone bank for Trustees’ elections, painting protest signs more times than she can count, developing weekly flyers to faculty, arranging faculty lunches, ordering gifts for retiring faculty, and much more!

With her number one priority her students, JoAnn believes that improving the campus lives of faculty will lead to a better learning environment for students. Across all disciplines are numerous studies that demonstrate much higher ratios of student success with positive teacher- student rapport. Some of her most rewarding experiences have been from meeting up with or being contacted by previous students now succeeding in the work world. JoAnn’s hobbies include going to the beach, reading, and interior design.

Elizabeth has worked at San Joaquin Delta Community College as a full time psychology professor since 2000. Prior to that time, she taught part-time at Delta for 5 years. She has also taught in the GED program, the Migrant Transition Program, as well as in Learning Disabilities and Social Science. She received her Ed.D from the University of the Pacific, and is a Licensed Educational Psychologist who continues a private practice in her spare time. In addition, she holds a Pupil Personnel Services credential in both school psychology and school counseling.

For the past seven years, Elizabeth has been the advisor to the Delta Psi, the psychology club on the Delta campus. She also leads the college's substance abuse certification program and chairs the community advisory committee. Currently, Elizabeth serves as the President of the college's local. Statewide, she represents higher education at state CTA and serves on the communication committee.

Brad Reynolds was born and raised in southern California and received degrees are from UCLA and USC. His specialty is Caribbean History, but he also teaches US History and European History. Brad has taught history at three universities and two community colleges and has been at College of the Canyons since 1975.

A product of the California Community College System, Michael completed an Associated degree in Math/Science from Victor Valley College in 1991. He completed his undergraduate degree in applied mathematics from the University of California, Irvine in 1994, and his graduate degree in mathematics from Northern Arizona University in 2000.

Michael began teaching mathematics at Victor Valley College in 2000, and began teaching physics in 2008. He served as the department chair of both the mathematics department and the physical sciences department. Michael is interested in the use of technology in the classroom to enhance the learning process.

Michael served his local chapter as the secretary, vice president, and president since 2004. He is a member of the negotiation team and is a graduate of the CCA Building Strong Locals Academy (Third Class).

John has been a full-time faculty member at Citrus College for almost a decade. He has a Bachelors Degree in Political Science and a Masters in Speech Communication. He was Director and Coach of the Citrus College Forensics (speech and debate) program taking them the the Phi Rho Pi National Tournament several years. The team won numerous awards including a Gold Medal in Debate. In 2000 he was a Los Angeles Times debate analyst for the Bush/Gore Presidential Debate.

John has served the Citrus College Faculty Association (CCFA) for many years in various capacities. He has been Secretary, Vice-President and Grievance Chair, and in 2006/07, President. During the spring of 2007 he was nominated for, and received a CTA/CCA "WHO" Award. Currently he serves as CCFA Past President.

John has a multitude of hobbies. He received his private pilot's license in 1987 and has flown many hours in various types of single-engine aircraft. He is also an avid fan of distinctive architecture and has visited buildings designed by such luminaries as Frank Lloyd Wright, John Portman, I.M. Pei, Frank Gerhy, Philip Johnson, Santiago Calatrava, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Eero Saarinen to name a few. His travels have taken him 41 states and 14 different countries.

Luisa joined Mt. San Antonio faculty as a full time professor in 2002. She teaches Spanish in the Department of Foreign Languages at Mount San Antonio College and had been teaching for 25 years, the last 10 at the community college level. Having been raised with both languages, she is completely bilingual and thoroughly enjoys teaching Spanish. Her education includes an A.A. & B.A. (English), an M.A.and ABD (Spanish).

She also taught 3 years at the high school level, 3 years at U. C. Davis, and 9 years at the University of Nebraska in Omaha. Prior to that, she worked in the private sector for 10 years as an engineer. For the past five years at Mount San Antonio College she has been first the Department of Foreign Languages Faculty Association Representative and Academic Senate Senator (3 yrs), Academic Senate Senator-At-Large (2 yrs.). Director for the Faculty Association Executive Board (2 yrs.) and Director District G for the past 2 years. Presently she is Vice President for the Mount Sac Faculty Association and CCA’s Director G.

For Luisa, her students come first. She considers her work with the Senate and the Faculty Association an extension of her classroom dedication, as the ultimate goal is to help provide a better teaching environment for students through service to her institution. Between grading papers and attending meetings, she enjoys spending time with her six children, four grandchildren, crocheting, traveling and reading.

Currently a counselor at Long Beach City College, Phyllis has taught and coached in K-12, has an M.S. degree in Physical Education (sport psychology emphasis), an M.S. degree in Counseling (marriage and family therapy), and a Ph.D. in Psychology.

She is a committed and respected member of her local board. Faculty leadership respects her integrity and compassion for faculty rights and seeks her out for her gifted advice. Phyllis has been active with her local, holding the offices of Pacific Coast Faculty Representative (two terms) on their Executive Board. Membership in CCA is important to Phyllis, “because if you don’t stand for something important, you may fall for something that’s less worthy.”

In addition to her work with CCA and at Long Beach City College, Phyllis is a writer, artist, student of Ancient Mysticism, History, Culture, Race and Human behavior. She is also an active Racquetball player and seeking eternal life.

Adam is a professor of anthropology at Rio Hondo College where he has been teaching since 2000. He earned his Ph.D. from UCLA and also has a Master's in sociology and a law degree from the University of Wisconsin. Teaching both online and on campus, Adam has been concentrating on physical anthropology and human sexuality from a cross-cultural perspective. One of his best experiences was teaching through a study abroad program in London.

Adam served as the treasurer, vice-president, and president of his local. He also started a chapter newsletter and website (which upset the administration). Currently serving as negotiations chairperson, Adam has continued to remain involved in his association. He was the faculty coordinator for Rio Hondo's inaugural local leadership academy. Recently, Adam became president of the Academic Senate.

In his spare time (as if there is any), Adam spends time with his wife and twin daughters. He has also been busy writing and helping others develop low-cost textbooks offered online for students.

A professor of economics at Cypress College, Fola Odebunmi was elected to the CCA Board in Fall 2011. An active unionist her entire career, she served at her local, North Orange, as a negotiator, vice president, and president. Fola also held the offices of vice president and president for the academic senate. CCA recently recognized Fola for her work with students from diverse backgrounds by presenting her with the 2011 Mary Ann Pacheco Diversity Award.

Once a “freeway flyer” who taught a variety of History courses at a number of Community Colleges, California State Universities and a private university in southern California, as well as a one year tenure as a professor of Sociology at Connors State College in Warner, Oklahoma, Dorothy “landed” at the Riverside Community College District (RCCD) in 2000, when she was hired as an Associate Instructor of History at the Moreno Valley campus. She has subsequently taught at all three of the colleges in the Riverside Community College District (RCCD) but now calls Norco College “home.”

Prior to entering the teaching profession, Dorothy worked in the corporate and non-profit arenas in such capacities as a Circuit Designer for Pacific Bell and the Assistant Program Director of the Ombudsman Program of Riverside County. Dorothy’s academic journey began at East Los Angeles College where she majored in Music. She then transferred to Citrus College as a Sociology major and ended her Community College stint as a Business Major at Mount San Antonio College. She eventually earned her B.A. and M.A. degrees in American Studies and Women’s Studies at CSU Fullerton before Advancing to Candidacy in the Doctoral program in History at UC Riverside.

In addition to teaching, Dorothy as served on the Norco College Emergency Budget Committee, the Riverside Community College District Chancellor Search Committee, and the Norco College Assessment Committee. Dorothy currently serves on the Norco College Academic Senate, the Norco College Scholarship Committee, and the RCCD delegate to the CTA State Council of Education and as a mentor for the Norco College Puente Program. In her spare time, Dorothy enjoys attending the theater, travelling, photography, and networking on “Facebook.”

Paula Jacobs has been a faculty member at Saddleback College in the South Orange County Community College District since 1981. Before coming to Saddleback, she was a faculty member at College of the Canyons and College of the Desert, and has also taught at the secondary level.

Paula has taught reading, developmental, educational, and applied psychology; served as a Learning Disability Specialist and Instructional Specialist; and is currently a generalist counselor in the Division of Counseling Services and Special Programs. She has been active in her local Academic Senate and served as Saddleback College Faculty Development Chair for seven years.

Her academic background includes a B.A. in History, a M. A. in Education (reading), a M.A. in Educational Psychology and completion of doctoral coursework in Curriculum and Instruction. She has served two terms on CTA State Council, has been a member of the SOCCCDFA Representative Council, and is currently the Grievance Chair for Saddleback College and SOCCCDFA Secretary.

As a statewide activist for Higher Education, John Martin sees CCA and its Board of Directors as a vehicle and a force for dramatic change at the state level for the betterment of contingent faculty. He intends to use his commitment and experience to communicate his goals to all those who need to hear the message. "Equal pay for Equal work" is the foundation of his activism. John strongly believes that contingent faculty must have real job protection, as well as academic freedom and respect in all aspects of the profession in order to fulfill their potential as instructors and to better serve their students.

John began his activist career in higher education when he was hired at Shasta College in 1999 and began attending the Faculty Association meetings. His continued presence led to his being elected as one of Shasta’s part-time reps. John served in that position for a several years before getting involved with the CCA Board, where he is currently serving as its Northern Director for PT Faculty. He is a member of the CCA Part-time Issues Committee (PTIC), the Diversity Committee and the Budget Committee.

John teaches primarily U.S. History at both Shasta and Butte Colleges. He received his M.A. degree in history from CSU, Chico and is especially interested in 19th and 20th century history.

John Sullivan has been teaching English in the California community college system since 1996. He served in a one-year temporary full-time position at Riverside City College in the 2007/08 Academic Year, and returned to part-time work that summer. He continues to teach at two community colleges and a private university.

John served as the part-time faculty representative on the Riverside Community College Faculty Association Executive Board from 1998 to 2005. He has also been chair of RCCDFA's Governance committee, served on the Bargaining Team, was a part-time Faculty Academic Senator, and has been semi-active in the San Bernardino College Association.

At the state level, John has served on the Part-time Issues Committee since 1999, including stints as the committee chair; on the CCA Governance Committee; on the CCA Budget Committee; and on the CCA Elections Committee.

In his "spare" time, John is active at his church overseeing the Visual Presentation Ministry, and he is active in both Single's and Men's ministries. His basic philosophy for teaching is "always put students first; they must be our first priority." To that end, in Spring 2005, he was recognized by the Latino Educators of Tomorrow and Student CTA organizations for his service to students at Riverside City College. Always looking forward, he hopes to continue engaging his students and colleagues for many more years.

He graduated and transferred from Riverside Community College to the University of California, Riverside; he received dual degrees in Psychology and Sociology and a Master’s of Science degree in Educational Counseling and Guidance with a Pupil Personnel Services Credential from California State University, San Bernardino.

Julius has worked in Higher Education for thirteen years; he enjoys working with an organization which influences faculty and student lives in a positive manner, statewide.

Debra has been teaching health and Physical Education at Victor Valley College for the past 20 years. As a former basketball coach and part-time instructor (Ventura, Oxnard, Santa Clarita, Arizona) she labels herself "an advocate" for students and faculty. CCA gives Debra the opportunity to represent and speak out for more faculty thereby serving students with the best instructors in the country.

Debra has two children: Tiana, 31, is currently attending community college in pursuit of her AA degree in human services. Debra's youngest daughter, Taryn, 26, graduated from Victor Valley College and California State University at Fullerton. She is seeking a kindergarten teaching job.

Debra currently serves as Curriculum Chair of the Academic Senate, and before that, as the faculty association President for three years, Vice-president for four years and an area representative for two years. She has also served as a member on her local negotiating team. She has been active with her local since 1996 and teaching since 1990 in the California Community College system.

Theresa Montaño an associate professor of Chicana and Chicano Studies at Cal State University Northridge. As a professor at Cal State Northridge, she teaches courses to teacher candidates in the area of Equity and Diversity in School, Chicano/a Childhood and Adolescence, and research in Chicano/a education. She also teaches in the Educational Leadership doctoral program for the College of Education.

An active unionist, Montaño joined the staff of United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA), where she worked as an area representative and professional development specialist for nine years.

Before accepting a position at California State University, Northridge (CSUN), Theresa was faculty advisor and instructor in UCLA’s Teacher Education Program. From 2000-2002, she served as co-director of UCLA’s TeachLA program, a union-district-university collaborative in Los Angeles. Theresa’s research is in the schooling of Chicano/a-Latino/a students; Critical pedagogy; teacher activism and Bilingual/ELL instruction and policy issues.

Montaño is the newly elected voice of higher education on the CTA Board of Directors. Montaño is familiar with that role having previously served for six years as an NEA board director. Her many years of experience as a middle and high school teacher in Los Angeles and Denver, Colo., gives her a special understanding of issues facing educators in California’s public schools.

Theresa also serves on the Board of Directors for the California Faculty Association (CFA), serving as one of two representatives for the Council for Affirmative Action. She is the CTA Board liaison to both Student California Teachers Association and the California Community College Association where she sits as an ex-officio member of the Board.

Dr. Gilda Bloom-Leiva is a member of the California Faculty Association, the largest higher education affiliate of the NEA. At the state level, she was appointed to the CFA Affirmative Action Council by then-President John Travis. She has also served as an elected local chapter officer (Vice President and College of Education Representative) and a representative to the California Teachers Association State Council of Education, the policy-making body.

In June of 2008, Gilda was elected statewide chair of the CTA Civil Rights in Education Committee, a standing committee of the CTA State Council. Currently, she is the statewide Chair of CTA’s Equity and Human Rights Conference. She has been a dedicated and committed member of both the CTA and NEA Hispanic Caucuses for many years, and presently serves as the national Chair of the NEA Hispanic Caucus.

She has also served as a CTA representative to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, and has been appointed to a variety of CTA committees (including the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Committee). She is a graduate of the NEA Emerging Leader Academy, Class of 2005.

Gilda attended the New York City public schools, as well as a public high school in Ohio. She received a BS in Education from Bowling Green State University (OH) and two MAs: one in Mexican American Studies from San Jose State University and one in curriculum and instruction from Stanford University. Her Ph.D. is from Stanford University in Sociolinguistics/Cultural Anthropology.

With five teaching credentials from three states, Gilda's teaching experience includes middle school, high school, community college, undergraduate, and graduate students. She has taught English and Spanish in the public schools; at the community college level, she taught Chicano Studies, Ethnic Studies, and anthropology. Today, she trains individuals to be teachers at San Francisco State University.

In the past, Gilda conducted research in bilingual elementary classrooms; her current research interests include attitudes towards skin color and Spanish language dialects of Latino children. She is a contributor to the Dictionary of Mexican American History edited by Matt Meier and Feliciano Rivera, and serves on the Editorial Board of the Bilingual Research Journal, a journal of the National Association for Bilingual Education.

Gilda is of Puerto Rican and Cuban ancestry, and grew up bilingual in a traditional Latino household. She was born in in New York City, but spent much of her childhood in the Caribbean.
